2004 CBTF Technology Propels maxZ86Twins to Fast Bermuda Race StartAfter a start-line luffing match, the maxZ86 Pyewacket led the way at the start of the Big Boat Demonstration Division today in the Newport to Bermuda Race. She was followed by just one length by her 86-foot sister ship Morning Glory in the opening stages of the 635-nautical mile race. Designed by San Diego naval architects Reichel Pugh, the two maxi-raters are both powered by patented CBTF™ (Canting Ballast Twin Foil™) technology. Despite light weather conditions at the start, both boats are tipped to set new monohull records to Bermuda. However their race times will not be counted in the overall IMS Racing Division because their radical underwater appendages provide a substantial speed and performance advantage over conventional boats. The official race record for conventional-keel boats is 53 hours 39 minutes 22 seconds, set by Roy Disney (Los Angeles, CA) in 2002, in his previous Pyewacket, a 75-footer. Newport to Bermuda is the first major ocean race for Disney’s new Pyewacket and for Morning Glory, owned and skippered by Hasso Plattner (San Francisco, CA). Both boats were launched late last year. The third maxZ86 in the division is another Reichel Pugh design, the 86-foot Windquest, sailed by Dick and Doug DeVos of Ada, Michigan. She has a conventional keel. The spinnaker start off Newport’s Castle Hill Light House in a six-knot northeaster saw all three maxZ86s engage in a luffing match before bearing away on course at the gun. Pyewacket led and eked out a one to two boat-length advantage over Morning Glory as they began rapidly overhauling the 119 boats in the smaller IMS Racing divisions which had started earlier. As they cleared Brenton Reef off the entrance to Narragansett Bay, the breeze strengthened to 10-12 knots and their boat speeds increased sharply. “They went like bats out of hell,” said marine photographer Daniel Forster who was following the fleet from a helicopter. “It was very exciting. It was like Formula One cars hunting down Nascar racers as they sailed into the sunset.” A complex weather situation with two weak cold fronts moving over the eastern seaboard should bring light northeasters and foggy conditions to the fleet tonight. Weather conditions should improve during the day on Saturday with the second front bringing strengthening northwesterly breezes, according to the forecasters at Commodores Weather, the specialty weather service in Nashua, NH. CBTF Co., a San Diego-based company, was renamed from DynaYacht Inc. in April of 2003 to market and promote the patented CBTF™ (Canting Ballast Twin Foil™) technology. This innovative technology provides a prime opportunity for a new line of custom and production boats for the racing and cruising markets. Along with providing licenses for CBTF boats, CBTF Co. focuses on working with owners, designers and builders around the world to help optimize their use of CBTF technology.
