Day three of Big Boat Series

September 17, 2005

Another great day on the bay today. 15 - 25 knots of wind and some more very close racing between Morning Glory and Genuine Risk. MG finished first across the line in both races today, but GR was only a boatlength (about 5 secs) behind in the first race and therefore saved her handicap (18 secs) to beat MG on corrected time. Again the racingb was very very close, with several lead changes and great competition.

In the second race, the breeze built and we sailed another race out under the Golden Gate Bridge and back in again... top speed for MG was 26.5 knots coming downwind under spinnaker headed for the Golden Gate bridge... at that speed the other boats on the race course look like they are anchored. The performance of these boats is amazing. In 18 knots of wind MG is sailing at 11.5 knots upwind over a knot faster than an America's Cup boat. Going downwind we are sailing at about wind speed (18 knots) which is about 7 or 8 knots faster than an AC boat (which, at 85 feet in length is the same size as Morning Glory).
